Full Scale Emergency ExerciseOn Saturday, August 21, emergency personnel, school staff, law enforcement and others gathered at C.W. Stanford Middle as part of a training exercise to determine their emergency readiness. Nearly 600 law enforcement officers and more than 140 volunteers were involved in the full-scale exercise which simulated an active shooter on the school campus.

Over the course of several hours, evaluators and other on-lookers heard blanks fired from taped-up weapons, saw the sheriff’s office’s armored vehicle in action and witnessed the cooperation of multiple law enforcement, school and other organizations as they worked to resolve the mock scenario.

The exercise was the result of more than a year’s worth of planning. The drill was part of a nearly $300,000 federal Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools awarded to the district in June 2008.  As a result of the drill, school officials and emergency personnel are better prepared for real emergencies in our school system.
